FOREWORD
Foundation Class is the compilation of teachings prepared C for the believers that are ready to join
LAUTECH Interdenominational Chapel and as follow up material for those who made decision to follow Jesus
as their Lord and Saviour. This material also aims to proffer basic Christian doctrines as basis for
Christian growth and service in the Chapel.
The efforts of Pastor Adeoluwa Adeyemi and Dr. Oluwatosin Ige to see that this work is formally put
together and well documented in its first edition is highly commendable. This second edition with a
little review and addition of lesson three will certainly impart the believers to be rooted and
established in the truth.
As you go through these Bible teachings, determine to practice them. Let them become your lifestyle,
then, you are blessed. Shalom!
Rev'd David Olawuyi

¬¬¬¬¬LESSON FOUR: HOLY COMMUNION: THE SUBSTANCE OF OUR FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS¬¬¬¬¬
WHAT IT MEANS AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO US TODAY
Key Verses: While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." 27: Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28: This is my blood of the b covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matt 26:26-28
Text: Exodus 12:1-28, Matthew 26:17-29
Preamble:
The Lord's Supper is also referred to as Holy Communion or the Eucharist. The word Eucharist comes from the Greek word that connotes "thanksgiving." Some Christian denominations prefer the term the Lord's Supper because the Lord Jesus instituted the rite with the disciples during the evening of the Jewish Passover meal. The Jewish Passover, the occasion for the institution of the Holy Communion, was an annual feast that God commanded the Jews to celebrate as the commemoration of the deliverance of the Children of Israel from the angel of death that God sent to kill all the firstborn males in Egypt.
The Passover Feast was, therefore, a memorial feast commemorating God's mighty deliverance. Each time it was done, the Israelites reminded themselves of God's love in rescuing them from slavery. (Exodus 12:1-28),
Note These:
When Holy Communion is viewed from the antecedent of the Jewish Passover, then, it should be interpreted as playing the same role that the Passover Feast played in the minds of the Israelites. It should call to mind the sacrificial love that led Jesus Christ to die on the cross as the Lamb of
God who takes away our sins. This is in line with Pauline theology about Holy Communion in I Corinthians 11:23-26 with special emphasis on verse 26 which reads thus: "for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."
I. Further Interpretation and Concepts of The Holy Communion:
a. Roman Catholic's Concept called "TRANSUBSTANTIATION." That is the bread and wine are mystically turned into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ by priestly action of the priest. Martin Luther, the Father of Church reformation and renegade Roman Catholic priest rejected the Catholic interpretation and raised the concept called CONSUBSTANTIATION.
b. Protestants' Concept called "CONSUBSTANTIATION."
i That is, although the bread and wine do not become the actual body and blood of Christ Jesus, yet Christ is present with both bread and wine during the administration of the rite.
ii. Holy Communion is observed in obedience to the command of the Lord as a memorial of the Last Supper and a demonstration of the Communicant's faith in the saving work and sacrificial death of Christ Jesus.
II. Biblical Requirements:
Read 1 Cor. 11:23-33 reveal the biblical requirements to partake in eating the bread and wine as the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Failure to adhere to these biblical procedures attracts God's judgement upon your Life.
The Biblical Requisites include:
a. You must be born again. The First Communicants were Christ's disciples. Matthew 26:17-29, John 3:1-6, cf. I Cor. 11:29
b. Examine Yourself, don't partake in an unworthy manner. I Cor. 11:27-28, 2 Cor. 13:5 c. Repent from all known and unconscious sins, be cleansed by His blood, Prov. 28:13 Matt. 26:28, Romans 10:9-10, Acts 13:28-29, 26:18; Eph. 1:7, Heb. 9:19-22.
d. Partake in the Holy Communion with faith, Heb. 11:6, Rom. 14:23, Matt. 19:26, Matt. 21:21-22
e. Partake in the Holy Communion with Expectation of God's Wonders.
f. Children that are not mature to consciously make decision for genuine salvation by themselves are not to partake in the Holy Communion
III. The Blessings:
a. If you partake in an unworthy manner attracts curse, sickness and death; then, if you partake according to the biblical principles, you are blessed with healing, fruitfulness, deliverance from all kinds of demonic yokes and oppression etc. Read 1 Cor. 11:23-33
b. Renewal of Covenant to faithfully serve the Lord, Matthew 26,17-29. Tapping the fullness of life in Christ Jesus, John 6:35-58, John 10:10
